Understanding the Importance of Regular Oil Changes

Oil is the lifeblood of your UTV’s engine. It lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and helps keep the engine cool. Over time, oil breaks down and becomes less effective, which is why regular changes are crucial. Riding style, conditions and frequency all play a key factor in how often you should change your oil. Take a look at our post all about oil change frequency, to see what is right for you.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need to get the job done. You’ll need:

  • The correct grade and amount of oil as specified in your UTV’s manual

  • A new oil filter

  • A wrench set

  • An oil catch pan

  • Gloves and safety glasses

  • Rags for cleanup

Step 2: Warm Up Your UTV

Start your UTV and let it run for a few minutes. Warming up the engine helps the oil flow more easily.

Step 3: Locate the Oil Drain Plug and Filter

Turn off the engine and locate the oil drain plug and filter. These are typically found under the UTV. If you’re unsure, refer to your owner’s manual.

Step 4: Drain the Old Oil

Place your oil catch pan under the drain plug, remove the plug with the wrench, and let the old oil drain out. Be patient and allow all the old oil to drip out.

Step 5: Replace the Oil Filter

Once the oil is drained, move on to the oil filter. Use a filter wrench to remove the old filter. Before installing the new filter, apply a little oil to the rubber gasket for a better seal.

Step 6: Add New Oil

Find the oil filler cap on your engine, remove it, and add the new oil. It’s crucial to use the type and amount of oil recommended in your UTV’s manual.

Step 7: Check for Leaks and Dispose of Old Oil

After replacing the filler cap, turn on the engine and check for any leaks around the filter and drain plug. Once you confirm there are no leaks, turn off the engine and properly dispose of the old oil at a recycling center.

Step 8: Final Check

After the oil change, check the oil level with the dipstick. Wipe it clean, insert it back, and then remove it again to check the level. Add more oil if needed.

Changing the oil in your UTV is a straightforward process that is vital for the longevity and performance of your vehicle. Regular oil changes keep your engine running smoothly and can prevent costly repairs down the line. As always, consult your UTV’s manual for specific recommendations and intervals, and when in doubt, don’t hesitate to reach out to a professional.
