Updated: Mar 12

The beginners guide to changing the oil in your UTV.

Changing the oil in your UTV (Utility Task Vehicle) is a fundamental maintenance task that every UTV owner should know how to do. Regular oil changes keep your UTV's engine running smoothly, extend its lifespan, and ensure optimal performance. In this step-by-step guide, designed for beginners, we'll walk you through the process of changing the oil in your UTV, helping you maintain your off-roading machine in top shape.

Oil

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools and supplies on hand:

Step 2: Prepare Your UTV

  • Start by ensuring your UTV is on a level surface, and the engine is cool but not entirely cold. Warm oil will flow more easily and help remove impurities.

  • Put on your safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from any oil spills and splatters.

Step 3: Locate the Drain Plug and Oil Filter

  • Refer to your UTV's owner's manual to locate the oil drain plug and oil filter. They are typically situated on the bottom side of the engine.

  • Place the drain pan underneath the drain plug to catch the used oil.

Step 4: Drain the Old Oil

  • Use a socket wrench or the appropriate tool to loosen the oil drain plug. Make sure the drain pan is directly underneath to catch the oil.

  • Let the old oil drain completely into the pan. This may take a few minutes.

Step 5: Remove and Replace the Oil Filter

  • While the old oil is draining, use your oil filter wrench to remove the old oil filter. Be prepared for some additional oil to drain from the filter.

  • Before installing the new oil filter, dip your finger into the fresh oil and run it around the rubber gasket on the top of the new filter. This will ensure a proper seal.

  • Screw the new oil filter onto the filter housing by hand, tightening it until it's snug, usually about 3/4 to 1 turn after the gasket contacts the base.

Step 6: Add New Oil

  • Using a funnel to prevent spills, pour the recommended amount of new engine oil into the oil fill port. Refer to your owner's manual for the specific volume.

  • Wait a minute to allow the oil to settle, then check the oil level using the dipstick. Top off if necessary to reach the recommended level.

Step 7: Dispose of Used Oil Properly

  • Used engine oil is considered hazardous waste and should be disposed of properly. Many auto parts stores and recycling centers accept used oil for free. How to dispose of used oil

  • Double-check that the drain plug and oil filter are securely tightened.

  • Wipe down the UTV to remove any spilled oil.

Changing the oil in your UTV is a straightforward yet essential maintenance task that beginners can tackle. By following this step-by-step guide, you'll ensure that your UTV's engine runs smoothly, extends its lifespan, and performs at its best. Regular oil changes will keep you ready for more adventures on the off-road trails. Always consult your UTV's owner's manual for specific guidelines, and remember to dispose of used oil responsibly. Happy riding!
