DIY Oil Change for Polaris General XP: A Step-by-Step Guide

Smooth Rides Ahead: Your Easy Guide to Changing Oil in the Polaris General XP

Hey there, Polaris General owners! Ready to roll up your sleeves and get a little greasy? Changing the oil in your Polaris General XP 1000 or XP 4 1000 is a satisfying way to connect with your machine. Plus, it's easier than you think! Here’s a straightforward guide to ensure your General keeps purring like a kitten.

Gearing Up: What You'll Need

  • A sturdy drain pan

  • Trusty shop rags

  • Nitrile gloves (because, well, oil)

  • Safety glasses (always a smart move)

  • A handy funnel

  • A reliable torque wrench

  • 6mm and 8mm sockets and a ratchet

  • A grease gun for extra slickness

Safety First!

Remember, always wear safety glasses and gloves when you’re working on your General. You’re going to need the Full Synthetic PS-4 Oil Change Kit (part number 2879323) for this job.

The Oil Change: Step by Step

  1. Park It Right: Find a nice, flat spot and park your General. Make sure it’s in PARK.

  2. Warm-Up: Let the engine run for 2-3 minutes. This helps warm up the oil for a smoother flow.

  3. Access Point: Tilt that cargo bed to reach the oil cap.

  4. Cap and Plug Prep: Remove any debris around the engine oil cap and the oil drain plug.

  5. Drain the Old: Position your drain pan (tip: a rag at the bottom reduces splashing). Then, remove the drain plug with your 6mm socket. Watch out for hot oil!

  6. Filter Out: Time to remove the oil filter. Turn it counterclockwise and take it off.

  7. Clean and Lube: Wipe the filter area clean. Then, take your new filter, lightly oil the O-ring, and screw it on by hand – an extra three-quarters turn should do it.

  8. Plug It Back: Got a new sealing washer? Good. Put it on the drain plug and screw it back in. Torque it to 12 ft-lbs.

  9. Fill 'Er Up: Add 2.5 quarts of engine oil.

  10. Idle and Check: Start the engine, let it idle, then check for any leaks.

  11. Dipstick Duty: Wipe, reinsert, and check the oil level. Top off as needed.

  12. Clean Up: Wipe away any spills and lower the cargo bed.

  13. Dispose Wisely: Remember to dispose of your used oil and filter responsibly.

But Wait, There’s More!

  • Don’t forget to grease the propshaft and give the spark arrestor a good cleaning. You’ll find the grease zerks in the driver’s rear wheel well and through the skid plate’s access hole.

  • To tackle the spark arrestor, loosen its fastener with an 8mm socket, clean it, then put it back and torque to 8 ft-lbs.

Tech Tip: Service Interval Alerts Your General’s got a smart feature to remind you when it’s service time. The wrench icon flashes when it's time for a check-up.

Resetting the Service Interval:

  • For the instrument cluster: Hold the MODE button, cycle to "Service Hours," and reset or adjust as needed.

  • For the Ride Command display: Go to settings, then Vehicle, and reset the OIL LIFE/SERVICE.
